Xochimilco’s Organic Market

0

The sun is shining, there’s a nice breeze and you’re sitting under a big shady tree with your friends, listening to the happy sounds of the marimba…

The Pochote organic market in Xochimilco is one of the most peaceful and relaxing places to hang out in Oaxaca.  It’s a favourite of locals, expats and tourists.

Held in the garden of the Iglesia Xochimilco every Friday and Saturday the market, while small,  has a wide range of  produce available.  You’ll find several stalls selling fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables as well as eggs, coffee, honey, chocolate and flowers.    They also have pottery, fabrics for the home (think beds and tables etc), clothing, jewellery and natural skin products.

If you’re looking for something pretty you can’t go past the beautiful ponchos that are handmade and coloured with natural dyes.  They also have jewellery made from silk pods, dyed beautiful pinks, yellows and blues using the same natural techniques.

Make sure you eat lunch while you’re there, the food is amazing.  There’s a mix of Mexican, Korean and Italian and I can never decide between the memelas or the momos!

The market is an easy walk from the centre, just head north on Porfirio Díaz until you get to the end.  Cross the road (Niños Heroes), walk up the stairs and take your first left.  It starts early in the morning and usually winds up around 3pm.

This market is no longer operating in Xochimilco.
