The Vagina Monologues

0

Rising to speak out after recent reports of the high numbers of murders and violence towards women in Oaxaca, a group of local women have come together to produce Eve Ensler’s ‘The Vagina Monologues’ as part of the worldwide V-Day movement.

A V-Day Campaign is a catalyst for mobilizing women and men to heighten awareness about violence against women and girls. By creating this global community, V-Day strives to empower women to find their collective voices and demand an end to the violence that affects two out of every five women across Mexico.

Last year over 5,800 V-Day benefits were held around the world raising funds and awareness. These highly successful events raised over US$5 million and this year Oaxaca will join the global movement for the first time as part of the V-Day 2016 Community Campaign.

More than ten dedicated women have been rehearsing three times a week for the last three months in preparation for this Saturday’s performance. All funds raised will be donated to GESMujeres, a long-standing community organisation that works to support women.

“I have presented this award winning play in four different locations across Australia and am really excited to have the opportunity to work with this wonderful community to bring this funny, heart-wrenching, political piece of theatre to Oaxaca” says Sally Lattin director and producer, “the support I have received here has been overwhelming.”

Tickets are available at GESMujeres, Casa Matriz Proveedora Escolar and Teatro Macedonio Alcalá.

The performance (in Spanish) is at 7pm on February 26 at Teatro Macedonio Alcalá.  Don’t miss out!
