San Agustin Huatulco is a community on Oaxaca’s coast with a population of approximately 400. It is without running water, internet, reliable roads or tourist amenities. Illiteracy is at a high level. Local artist and owner of Escuela de Muralism Jesus Gonzalez Gutierrez has been busy developing a children’s library in San Agustin. The Project, ‘Proyecto Bibliotecas Infantiles en la Costa de Oaxaca’ has been a labor of love since 2010 with contributions from volunteers such as architects Miguel Angel Bautista and Carlos Huerta.
Lacking facilities beyond a kindergarten, the project is heartily embraced by the San Agustin community which has welcomed a team of enthusiastic volunteers from England, France, the US, Denmark, South Korea, Poland, Germany and many other countries . Volunteers are provided lodging and meals while working tirelessly on activities such as designing and planting a garden, laying foundation, cooking, giving language lessons, music classes, fund raising, cataloguing the 3000 books already donated as well as organizing other administrative tasks.
This is an invitation to all who would like to participate in a summer camp in Oaxaca, Mexico, at the Bay of San Agustin Huatulco, a magical and beautiful place right by the ocean. Two weeks of sharing culture, arts, sports, workshops and friendship.” Jesus Gonzalez, Project director
Besides working on the project to build the children’s library, in their spare time volunteers have an opportunity to experience the captivating charm of village life. One can fish for tuna and marlin, snorkel in the coral reef, explore, practice speaking Spanish with locals, watch the sunset or simply chill on the beach.
“The idea of the project is to share with the people of the village of the bay of San Agustin, children and adults, our daily activities, things we do for every day living or for hobbies such as: painting, sculpture, yoga, music, theater, reading, swimming, video, photography, languages, sports, dancing, handicrafts, etc.
