This month OaxacaCine will host the 1st International Meeting of Audovisual Archivists of Oaxaca.
Inspired by community archiving projects in countries such as Ghana and New Zealand, the forum seeks to explore how not only the audiovisual records can be protected, but also the multiplicity of experiences, stories and memories of the inhabitants of Oaxaca. It is a platform for exchanging ideas and practices about the act of collecting, cataloguing, preserving, displaying and reinterpreting audiovisual materials that exist now, as well as those of the future.
The meeting will commence on Thursday, August 21st with a series of lectures at the San Pablo Cultural Centre. These lectures are open to the public and will cover topics such as ‘Archives in the 21st Century: Obsolescence and Preservation’, ‘Management and Development of Collections’, and ‘Community Archives’. The day will close with a special screening of the classic Mexican film ‘La Fórmula Secreta’ (Gámez y Gijón, 1964) at Teatro Macedonio Alcalá.
Day two of the meeting is open only to speakers and registered participants however the public lectures will continue on Saturday 23rd with a discussion about the politics of access. On Saturday night at 8pm there will be a surprise function in the atrium of the San Pablo Cultural Centre.
