This Saturday, 10th of October is the Día del Amaranto (Amaranth Day) and Oaxaca will be celebrating with a special event in Llano Park.
Held in conjunction with World Food Day, the event has been organised by Puente a la Salud Comunitaria, A.C., regional amaranth networks, and participating families from the Central Valleys of Oaxaca and the Mixteca Alta. There will be more than 250 participants including producers and members of micro-enterprise groups who will share their experience and knowledge about healthy eating and the cultivation of this ancestral seed.
The day will begin at 10am with a calenda starting from the corner of Independencia and Macedonio Alcalá and arriving at Llano Park at 11am. There will be cultural activities, live music from Raices and Trío Costa Chica, market stalls where you can try and purchase amaranth based foods and products, as well as a series of talks including “Nutrition and Public Health” and “Food Sovereignty”. Guest speakers include nutritionist Julieta Ponce Sánchez, Victor Suárez Carrera and Eduardo Torres Navarrete. The main event will be breaking the record for the biggest alegría (amaranth granola bar) in the world using amaranth from eight Mexican states.
So if you’d like to find out more about Amaranth and how it can help in the fight against malnutrition, anaemia, obesity and other chronic diseases, head down to Llano Park this Saturday between 10am and 5pm.
We hope to see you there!
