This Saturday, 4th of October is the Día del Amaranto (Amaranth Day) and Oaxaca will be celebrating with a special event in the Plaza de la Danza.
Held in conjunction with World Food Day, the event has been organised by Puente a la Salud Comunitaria, A.C., regional amaranth networks, and participating families from the Central Valleys of Oaxaca and the Mixteca Alta with the aim of exchanging experiences about good nutrition and the cultivation of the ancestral seed.
This year the festival will have more than 250 participants including producers and processors of Amaranth. There will be cultural activities, market stalls where you can try and purchase amaranth based foods and products, as well as conferences including “Food sovereignty – community organisation and the nutritional value of amaranth”. Guest speakers include Marco Buenrostro, Lorenzo Meyer, Adrián Argumedo and Rodolfo Neri Vela, the astronaut who took amaranth to space.
So if you’d like to find out more about Amaranth and how it can help in the fight against malnutrition, anaemia, obesity and other chronic diseases, head down to the Plaza de la Danza between 10am and 4pm this Saturday.
