The Abasto de Letras Festival Cultural is now underway with an exciting program of poetry, music, exhibitions, workshops, literature and film.
Running from November 4 – 9 in the Mercado de Abasto, the festival begins each day at 12pm with a guided tour of the market – the biggest in Oaxaca. If you’ve ever wanted to explore the market but felt daunted by the size and all the activity then this is the perfect opportunity to go. The tour finishes in the area de comedores and there you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch for $50 pesos.
There are free workshops all week including bookbinding, yoga, drawing, storytelling, experimental sculpture, painting, and jewellery making. Check the website for more details.
You’ll also find exhibitions of photography and paintings, book launches and talks, poetry (both in the market and at La Nueva Babel), and music including local band Paulina y el Buscapié.
An exciting new addition to this year’s program is the ‘autocine’ or drive in movie theatre in the Central de Abasto car park. The schedule is as follows:
5 November :”Tin Tán” – Francesco Taboada
6 November: “Vuelve a la Vida” – Carlos Hagerman
7 November: “Espiral” – Jorge Pérez Solano
8 November: “Norteado” – Rigoberto Pérez Cano
* We’ve just been advised that the autocine has been suspended until further notice *
