The Abasto de Letras cultural festival returns to Oaxaca this November to celebrate its 5th anniversary.
What makes this festival unique is that instead of utilising the traditional cultural spaces such as theatres and galleries the events will be held in the Central de Abasto market among the stalls of fruit, vegetables and clothing, in the dining rooms and in the car park. The festival is a collaboration between local artists and merchants – the artists participate free of charge and the vendors support the program by offering their spaces within the market.
This year’s theme is ‘Water and the Rivers of Oaxaca’ and there will be more than 50 activities including the Oaxaca Water Forum, conferences and round-table discussions, poetry, literary workshops and presentations, as well as a series of workshops for children and young people including printmaking, cooking, puppetry, poetry and journalism. International guests include Dominican poet Rei Berroa, Catherine Fletcher (USA), Lloyd Robson (Wales) y Sofía Esteves (Dominican Republic).
There will be concerts each day including Diego López, La bande-son imaginaire, Nathan Rivera & Jessie Andra Smith and the Orquesta Primavera de Oaxaca, as well as a screening of the documentary ‘El señor de las 3 caídas’.
The festival will officially open on Thursday 12th at 5pm however there are events earlier in the day so make sure you check the program.
The festival runs from November 12 – 14 and all events are free.
