This November the centre of Oaxaca will become a meeting place for ideas, reflection and fun as the city hosts the 34th International Book Fair. Starting on the 1st of November the fair will run for nine days and will include over 150 events.
Based in the Alameda de León (next to the Zocalo), there will be a large exhibition and sale of books, and this space will also host the literary program. There will be book launches, literary discussions, readings, concerts and exhibitions. There are multiple events each day including activities for both adults and children and all events are free.
The academic program will feature a number of workshops including creative writing, cultural management and journalism. Workshop leaders include Ricardo Cayuela, JM Servin, Elmer Mendoza, Nubia Macias, Bernardo Fernández Bef, Bernardo Esquinca and Vivian Abenshushán.
This year’s country of honour is Colombia and as well as the literary events there will be a special series of conferences and screenings of Colombian cinema.
One of the highlights of the festival is a special live show by 31 Minutos on November 19th. If you haven’t seen it before, this Chilean tv show is a mock news broadcast fronted by puppets. Make sure you check the FIL Facebook page for information on how to get tickets.
