The Festival Eduardo Mata, now in its 20th year, is a week-long celebration of both classical and contemporary music dedicated to the famous Mexican composer and conductor, Eduardo Mata.
Part of Oaxaca’s NOVO cultural month, this year’s festival presents an interesting program of events including the premiere of the opera ‘La Muerte Pies Ligeros’. This original piece is directed at children and includes costumes and set design based on illustrations by Francisco Toledo. Directed by José Luis Castillo, the opera features music by Victor Rasgado and a libretto by Oaxacan poet Natalia Toledo.
Opening on Friday 28th with ‘La Muere Pies Ligeros’, the festival also includes performances by the Banda de Música del Estado de Oaxaca and the Orquesta Esperanza Azteca. The awards ceremony for the first ‘Ibermúsicas – Oaxaca 2014’, a competition for symphonic band composition, will be held on Saturday 29th at Teatro Macedonio Alcalá and will be followed by a performance. The festival concludes with a multimedia presentation “Como Fue” – a review of Mexican life through urban music.
