Oaxaca’s National Danzonero Congress is celebrating it’s tenth anniversary this month. Originating in Cuba, danzón has a long tradition in Oaxaca and this festival aims to preserve and promote the popular dance through a four day program of presentations, music, workshops, conferencias and exhibitions.
Opening on Thursday, December 3 the inaugural concert with ‘Danzonera Acerina’ will be held in the zocalo at 8pm. There will be performances and demonstrations each day as well as workshops where you can learn some new steps (Cha Cha and Mambo anyone?) or perhaps work on your elegance and style. There will also be photography exhibitions and poetry readings.
Most events will be held in the zocalo and are free. You can see the full program below and don’t forget to follow the Congress on Facebook for daily updates.
